Chapter 7: The Operator Navi Selection Test

A few days after Megaman has absorbed the Cybeasts into his body, the chaos from the incident was fading.

At Cyber Academy, the school day has ended and Lan is preparing to head home.

"Finally, school is over!" Lan sighed as he walked out of the classroom. "Man, I am beat..."

"That's funny, you barely stood awake during the lessons." Megaman said to Lan as he is standing on his operator's shoulders.

"Yeah, but sometimes I get bored easily during these classes. But now that the day is over, I am going to go on the Net and..." before Lan could finish, he noticed something.

"What is it Lan?" Megaman asked, then Lan pointed to a crowd in the hallway, Mick was also there.

"I wonder what's everyone gathering for?" asked Lan as he walked up to the crowd. "So what's the big news?"

"Good time Lan! Someone just hung up an interesting flyer." said Mick as he shows Lan the flyer.

Lan reads the flyer which says "The Expo Pavilion Navi Operator Selection Test. Your Navi could be the one to guide the people of Cyber City and have them witness the next generation of Net Society."

"Yeah, they're recruiting an Operator Navi for the Expo Pavilion." said Mick.

"In case you don't know what it is Lan, a pavilion is a huge building that serves as the symbol of a major event." Megaman told Lan.

"You know that CyberCity is going to open that Expo really soon right? It sounds like they made the main pavilion really big. And they're gonna leave the tour guiding to a Navi." said Mick.

"A Navi being the tour guide?" Lan wondered.

"Actually, the Navi will be in the CopyBot will be the tour guide." Mick explained.

"...So you mean a Navi that is always being operated by a human, is gonna get to operate humans for a change? What a neat idea!" Lan smiled.

"I see... So they want a Navi to give tours of that building? It it's someone's Navi, you can pretty much go as you wanted." said Megaman.

"That sounds interesting to see. So where do we sign up?!" Lan asked excitedly.

"It says here that the selection test is being held at the Central Area NetCafe today." said Mick, as he looks at his PET's watch. "Woah! It's starting already!"

"Then what are we waiting for, let's hurry!" before Lan and Mick can exit, a voice shotuted out.

"Hold it right there!" The two stopped to see a woman who looks like a chef wailing up to them. Next to her is a bearded old man wearing a bamboo pointed hat, and is carrying a red and white tengu mask.

"Don't you kids know you're not allowed to run in the halls?" the old man asked.

"Those who don't follow the rules get detention." said the woman.

"We're sorry." Lan apologized, then asks "By the way, I've never seen you two here before. Are you new here?"

"That's right. My name is Pat Fahran, I am the new Home Economics teacher. I started here after the Cybeasts' rampage cooled down." the woman now known as Pat Fahran introduced himself. Then suddenly the old man just disappeared and reappeared behind Lan and Mick which surprises.

"And my name is Feng-Tian, I am just a humbe social studies teachers." said the old man now known as Feng-Tian.

"Woah! How did you do that?" Lan asked.

"I was one with the wind, that's all." Feng-Tian answered.

"So we got new teachers huh? By the Ms. Fahran, you look more like a chef than a teacher." Mick pointed out.

"That's because I always loved cooking! I was born and raised in Yumland. I was a chef there for a very long time. You may not know it, but I was a little famous there too. I came here to Electopia, because I am interested in it's food. From what I tasted, there's all sorts of ingredients here that don't exist as Yumland's native foods." Ms. Fahran explained.

"So you studying food, and Mr. Teng-Tian here is one with the wind." said Lan.

"I am willing to teach you to be one with the wind. If you want to learn, come and see me." said Feng-Tian as he instantly disappears.

"And come by my room if you want to learn cooking." Ms. Fahran smiled as she left.

"Shoot! We got to get to the NetCafe!" Mick yelled as he looks at his PET's watch.

Back home, Lan jacks Megaman into his computer. Megaman looks at the emails he received from Maylu, Dex, and Yai.

"Lan, we got emails from our friends back in ACDC. They heard about the Cybeast incident and seemed worried about us. Maylu even added and upgraded Roll Chip for us." said Megaman as he looks at the mailbox.

"We'll send them some replies telling them that we're okay. We can't tell them about the Cybeasts inside you, because they will even get more worried." said Lan.

"I agree. Anyway, we should head over to the Selection Test now." said Megaman as he heads into the Net.

In Central 1, Megaman arrives at the NetCafe and sees many Navis participating as well. One of them is a living train, one looked like a human drill, another is a trash compactor, and one looked like the skinny version of the Grim Reaper.

"Wow, looks like a lot Navis are competing here." said Megaman, then he notices a familiar Navi. "Tomahawkman!"

It was indeed Tomahawkman, who then notices Megaman calling out to him.

"Megaman! Long time no see!" Tomahawkman greeted.

"So if Tomahawkman is here, then that means..." Lan figured it out, then a another screen come on with Dingo.

"Yo Lan! It's been a long time!" Dingo happily greeted.

"Dingo! I never thought I'd run into you or Tomahawkman. So what brings you to CyberCity?" Lan asked.

"When I heard about this major expo being held here, Tomahawkman and I have decided to come by and check it out. Plus, we also heard about the Navi Operator Selection Test, so we entered. If we win, Tomahawkman and I might want to share the cultures of our tribe." Dingo explained.

"Well, looks like we got some major competition Lan." said Megaman.

"I hear you, Dingo and Tomahawkman are going to be tough to beat." Lan said from his screen.

Moments later, the Navis gathered and are waiting for the announcement.

"Welcome everyone to the Expo Pavillion Tour Operator Navi Selection Test. I will like to thank you all for coming here to participate to become the Navi tour guide selected for Cyber City's upcoming expo. This selection test will examine every single ability of your Navi! Today's first event will test everyone's intellect. Listen welll... the first thing is a cyberseal! Find it and another Navi will give you the next clue. Good luck everyone." an event Navi said.

"A Cyberseal? Never heard of that." Lan wondered.

"What do you think it is?" Megaman asked.

"Let's see... A cyberseal..." Lan gave it some serious thought and said "I got it!"

"You figured it out?" Megaman asked.

"Yeah, let's jack out now!" Lan said as he jacks out Megaman.

Lan went to the aquarium in Seaside Town and jacked into it's HP.

"See that Megaman?" Lan said as he pointed to the wallpaper. "The wallpaper has seals on it. I remembered seeing them when I was operating Aquaman during Shuko's lesson."

"Good thinking Lan. Now we just need to find the Navi who has the next clue." said Megaman.

"No need to look. Because I'm right here." said a Navi as she walked up to Megaman.

"So now that we solved this test, what is our next clue?" Megaman asked.

"You're next clue is to find a fish that can't swim. You can't find them in the real world." The Navi told Lan and Megaman.

"Fish that can't swim..." said Megaman.

"Can't find them in the real world..." said Lan.

Both of them put their chin and thought, then Megaman found the answer.

"I got it! Lan, jack me out and let's go the Fish Stick stand outside the aquarium." said Megaman.

"Okay!" said Lan as he jacks out Megaman.

Lan makes his way to the fish stick stand and stands in front of it.

"Fish sticks are fish. But they cannot swim, and they don't exist in the real world because you eat them." Megaman explained.

"Glad you figured it out, because I couldn't." said Lan as he jacks Megaman into the stand.

Inside the Cyberworld, Megaman finds the Navi who has the next clue.

"Congratulations! You passed the second test! Now for the final test, you must solve this riddle... 'I'm always looking at crayfish.' Solve it and you pass the final test." said the Navi.

"Oh boy, this sounds like a tough one..." said Megaman.

"Hey Megaman... I hear that one of the classroom's has a crayfish tank. And each of the classrooms have security camera in them don't they?" Lan asked.

"I think you're on to something Lan..." said Megaman as he jacks out.

Lan went back to school and went into a classroom. He finds a security camera focusing on a crayfish tank.

"I'm always looking crayfish. So if I was a camera focusing at crayfish, I would always be looking at them." said Lan.

"That makes sense. Way to figure it out Lan." said Megaman, then Lan jacks him in.

Inside the camera, Megaman finds a Navi who walks up to him.

"Great job! You won first place in round 1!" the Navi said as she popped a sham pane bottle with confetti.

"We did it Megaman!" Lan cheered from his screen.

"We sure did Lan." Megaman said.

"The road to Operator Navi has just begun. As a reward for coming in first, I am going to present you one of our Expo Folders, as well as an HP Memory. The second test will start soon, and we'll let you know. It will be tough, bur remember to do your best." the Navi winked as she gave the Expo Folder and HP memory to Megaman.

Minutes later, Lan leaves the school and begins to head home. On the way, he encounters Mick.

"Hey Mick, so how did it go?" Lan asked.

"Well, it was rough trying to figure out the last riddle, but I managed make it to round 2. When I got to the camera, I found out I came third when the Navi told me that a blue Navi made it first followed by some Navi that has an axe for a hand." Mick said.

"So Dingo and Tomahawkman got there before you did. Well those two may have a lot of power, but they think well once in a while." said Lan.

"Hey Lan, since we both finished round 1. How about a NetBattle?" Mick asked.

"Fine with me. I got nothing else to do, so let's go!" said Lan as he and Mick got out their PET's.

Megaman and Mick's Navi appeared inside an arena that has Megaman's symbol on the bottom.

"You're going down Megaman!" Mick's Navi yelled out.

"I don't think so!" said Megaman.

"Let's go Mick." said Lan.

"Battle Routine, set!" Lan and Mick yelled.

"Execute!" Megaman and Mick's Navi yelled, then a barrier appears around Megaman.

"What's that?" Mick asked.

"I installed a FirstBarrier Program into Megaman. When the battle begins, a barrier instantly activates." Lan explained.

"In that case, I'll take it out. Cannon Battlechip in, download!" Mick shouted as he inserts the chip. Mick's Navi forms a green Cannon and fires it at Megaman who dodges it.

"HiCannon Battlechip in, download!" Lan shouted as he inserts the chip. Megaman them forms a HiCannon and fires it at Mick's Navi.

"Check this out! Mini Bomb Battlechip Battlechip in, download!" Mick shouted as he inserts the chip. Mick's Navi then throws a Mini Bomb at Megaman.

"Try this on for size! StepSword Battlehip in, download!" Lan shouted as he inserts the chip. Megaman then forms a WideSword and dashes dodging the Mini Bomb and slashes Mick's Navi damaging him.

"Lucky shot! Area Steal and Wide Sword Battlchips in, download!" Mick shouted as he inserts the chips. Mick's Navi dashes towards Megaman and slashes his barrier making it disappear.

"Hah! You're barrier's gone!" Mick's Navi taunted.

"Maybe so, but your wide open!" said Megaman. Mick's Navi tries to slash Megaman with the Wide Sword, but Megaman dodges it and puches the Navi.

"Sword Battlechip in, download!" Lan shouted as he inserts the chip. Megaman then forms a Sword and begins to clash with Mick's Navi and easily overpowers him.

"Yo-Yo Battlechip in, download!" Mick shouted as he inserts the chip. Mick's Navi then forms a Yo-Yo and launches it to Megaman, but he blocks it with his Sword and sends it back hitting him.

"Wide Sword and Long Sword Battlechips in, download!" Lan shouted as he inserts the chips. Megaman then forms a Wide Sword in his right arm and raises them both to form a long energy blade.

"Program Advance! Life Sword!" Megaman shouted as he uses the blade to slash Mick's Navi heavily damaging him.

"AAAAAGGGHHH!" Mick's Navi screamed as he was deleted.

"No way..." Mick said in shock as his Navi was deleted.

"Oops. I guess I went a little overboard with the Program Advance." said Lan.

"I can't believe you Lan... You deleted my Navi!" Mick yelled in anger.

"But... you still have his backup data right?" Lan asked.

"Yeah... I will bring him back. You may have won this time Lan, but the next time we have a NetBattle, I will win!" Mick said as he heads back home.

"Mick certainly reminds me of Dex... We always beat him and Gutsman in NetBattles, and he's determined to beat me to become the best." said Lan.

"Yeah, makes me think of all of the battles we had with our friends back in ACDC." said Megaman.

Suddenly Lan's PET rang.

"Lan, we got an email. It's from the Aquarium Director." said Megaman.

"What's it say?" Lan asked.

Megaman read the emails and says "It says he wants us to appear at the trial of Captain Blackbeard for his attempt to take over the aquarium. Since we were the ones who stopped him, he needs you to testify against him. The trial is this afternoon at the GreenTown Courthouse."

"Uck... I'm so nervous about this." Lan said with a green face.

"Don't worry. You'll do fine. I'll be by your side." said Megaman as he appears from his PET and jumps onto Lan's shoulder.

"Thanks Megaman. Now let's head over to GreenTown." said Lan as he makes his way towards the LevBus station.

Meanwhile, inside a jail cell somewhere lies Captain Blackbeard. Then a man approaches him.

"Feeling comfortable are we?" asked the man.

"Argh! Now listen 'ere ye scallywag... Ye better get me off the hook or ye walk the plank." Blackbeard demanded.

"Relax, I have just received orders from the boss. I just have to follow them." said the man.

"Ye better get me out of here, or..." before Blackbeard could finish...

"Quiet... we're can't be talking for this long, or the people will get suspicious of us. You're trial is coming up. I must be going." said the man as he leaves.

Who was the man that was talking to Blackbeard?
